Murrieta’s Well Lures Wine Lovers to Livermore

Nov 05, 2017 08:20AM ● By Fran Miller

Though Napa Valley receives most of California’s wine attention, it’s the Livermore Valley that is home to California’s most firmly planted grape vine roots. One of the oldest wine regions in the Golden State, the area’s winegrowing potential was recognized long ago by pioneering winemaking families who recognized the ideal nature of the soil, the valley’s high altitude, and daily maritime breezes – all of which serve to create an ideal grape, and in turn, ideal wines, such as those crafted at Murrieta’s Well.

Owned by the Wente family since 1930, recent updates to the historic Murrieta’s Well property have made the winery a premier Livermore Valley wine destination. The casual yet sophisticated tasting room and patio are the perfect spots to enjoy an hour, or an afternoon, of sipping and dining. Stunning vistas, rolling hills, and vines as far as the eye can see make it one of the most enjoyable wine tasting locales in the Valley. Add to this the viticultural artistry of Robbie Meyer, director of winemaking, and the combo is exceptional.

Meyer has worked more than 20 vintages in some of California’s best winegrowing regions. He focuses on small lot harvesting and blending, and blends are what make Murrieta’s Well unique within the industry – their Whip (white blend) and Spur (red blend), both launched in 2010 in celebration of the winery’s 20th anniversary, are industry favorites.  All of their wines are crafted to showcase the best of each estate vintage, so their compositions change each year. All of their grape varieties are sourced exclusively from their estate.

Enjoy a variety of tasting options at Murrieta’s Well, such as:

The Wine and Food Experience: A pairing of four small plates and four Murrieta's Well wines - with a few surprises interspersed throughout the meal. Held in the downstairs barrel room and designed to showcase how food and wine come together, this tasting features a seasonal menu with dishes prepared by the winery’s in-house Chef and his culinary team. Murrieta’s Well wines are fabulous on their own, but their true nature is showcased best when paired with delicious dishes. $65/person (20% off for members)

The Tasting Bar: Conducted in a small group format, this tasting of limited production estate wines is held at the upstairs tasting bar with sweeping views of the estate from a balcony overlook. $25/person (complimentary for members)

The Patio/The Barrel Room: The Patio offers an al fresco tasting experience. The Barrel Room is available on a limited basis throughout the year, and guests can purchase the winery’s full wine list by the bottle, as well as enjoy items from a limited food menu. $25/person (complimentary for members)
