Markham Vineyards' 'The Altruist' Honors Community Heroes

Jul 10, 2020 10:44AM ● By Fran Miller

Markham Napa Valley Vineyards, located in beautiful St. Helena, honors veterans, first responders, and community heroes with the launch of its new wine ‘The Altruist,’ a Bordeaux-style red blend dedicated to those who courageously defend and preserve the nation’s freedoms and security.

The release of The Altruist launches with Markham’s charitable donation to and partnership with the Gary Sinise Foundation, the mission of which is to serve the nation by honoring our defenders, veterans, first responders, their families, and those in need. Markham plans to expand their recognition of everyday heroes with the ‘Community Hero Awards’ to launch in 2021.

The Altruist is a Merlot-based red blend of Napa Valley grapes predominantly from Markham Vineyards estate vineyards from the 2017 vintage. Crafted by Markham winemaker Kimberley Nicholls, the label features the Markham Cannoneer, a symbol that stands for the people, land, and values that make up Markham’s past and present. A US Navy veteran, winery founder Bruce Markham selected this image which was originally featured on his first label in 1978; it's based on a treasured bronze sculpture given to him by a friend. The Altruist new package is part of a full overhaul of the winery’s packaging including new lightweight glass for its bottles as part of the winery’s overall sustainability efforts.

Beyond making great wine, Markham Vineyards gives back to the community through many charitable organizations, is certified sustainable through Fish Friendly Farming and has been dual certified under both Napa Green programs through the Napa Valley Vintners. Only 10% of Napa Valley wineries have achieved dual certification. Learn more here and make a plan to visit Markham Vineyards’ historic 1879 stone winery during your next trip to the Napa Valley.
