Smuin Presents "Dance Series 02"

Smuin concludes its 24th season with "Dance Series 02," featuring a world premiere by internationally acclaimed choreographer Val Caniparoli titled "If I Were a Sushi Roll." Drawing on the athleticism and versatility of Smuin dancers, this cutting-edge piece weaves a captivating movement narrative set to a contemporary classical baroque soundtrack by American composer Nico Muhly and Faroese singer/songwriter Teitur. Last seen at Smuin with the witty "Tutto Eccetto il Lavandino," the San Francisco Chronicle raved about Caniparoli’s “miraculously timed [and] magic” choreography. Back by popular demand, Helen Pickett’s visually stunning "Oasis" also returns to dazzle audiences with its sensual and powerful choreography, set to a compelling original score by Emmy award-winning “House of Cards” composer Jeff Beal. An ode to the fluidity and transformative ability of water, the piece was described as “lush” and “beautifully performed” by The Mercury News upon its world premiere with Smuin in spring 2016. Rounding out the bill is Amy Seiwert’s "Falling Up," an intimate exploration of strength and trust between partners set to the music of Brahms. Revisiting the stage a decade after its world premiere in 2007, Seiwert’s first choreographed piece for the company was hailed as both an audience and critical sensation upon its debut.
