Culture Calendar: Lesher Center's Spring Lineup

Spring brings a sensational lineup of shows to Walnut Creek’s Lesher Center for the Arts, including the highly anticipated return of the Dance Theatre of Harlem March 16-17. This world-renowned ballet company, led by Artistic Director Virginia Johnson, is celebrated for innovative contemporary works and treasured classics. 


 

Center Rep performs Lynn Nottage's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, SWEAT, March 25 to April 16. This gripping drama explores race, class, and friendship as a group of workers struggle amidst economic turmoil. With its powerful themes, SWEAT was hailed by the New York Times as "a vital contribution to contemporary drama." (March 25-26 "Pay What You Can" tickets are available for a suggested price of $25.)


 

Join California Symphony March 25-26 for an unforgettable musical journey into the inner circle of Gustav Mahler, featuring the talented contralto Sara Couden, in a performance of Alma Mahler's "Fünf Lieder." Throughout its 2023 season, the symphony is celebrating contributions of female musicians with a lineup of exceptional solo performances. 

Celebrate Diablo Ballet's 29th Anniversary on March 31 with premieres of Confetti by Gerald Arpino and Elevator Operator by Amanda Farris, plus the classical ballet Paquita. Dinner and champagne with the dancers follows the performance at The Garden. 

Experience a musical journey like no other on April 2 when Diablo Symphony Orchestra and Festival Opera unite for Tales from the Briar Patch. Inspired by traditional African stories, this new mini-opera is a thrilling co-production that will transport you to another world.



 

Rock out with a tribute band on April 1 at Come Together: The Beatles Concert Experience. With authentic costumes and soaring harmonies, 'Come Together' takes you on a journey through the Beatles' legendary rise to stardom. Relive all the classics, from "She Loves You" to "I Want To Hold Your Hand."



Don’t miss the thrilling athleticism and mesmerizing artistry of one of today's most dynamic modern dance ensembles. On April 7, Paul Taylor Dance Company brings their world-renowned talent to Walnut Creek for a special one-night performance. With a vast repertoire of masterful choreography, the company is known for their electrifying moves.  


 

Put on your dancing shoes and get swept away on April 8 by the ABBA-mania of Super Trouper. Sing along to classics like "Dancing Queen," "Waterloo," and "Mamma Mia" at this family-friendly show for audiences of all ages. 


 

Join Diablo Regional Arts Association (DRAA) in honoring exceptional individuals from across the globe at Newsmakers: Lesher Speaker SeriesFollowing an insightful conversation with The Honorable Theresa May in March, Emmy Award-Winning Actor, Author, Director & Producer, Henry Winkler, comes to Walnut Creek on April 11. Don't miss this rare opportunity to hear from one of Hollywood's most talented and inspirational figures.


 


Take a deep dive into portraiture when Bedford Gallery presents, About Face, April 15-June 25. From celebrated artists like Andy Warhol to emerging talents like Claire Astrow and Joel Daniel Philips, this unique show features the work of over 80 artists, both juried and invitational, who capture the likeness of individuals throughout time.






 

Smuin Ballet’s 29th season finale celebrates the company's daring spirit with a quadruple bill, featuring Amy Seiwert's and Kate Skarpetowska's premieres, plus Michael Smuin's soul-stirring pas de deux, Dream. Completing the April 28-29 lineup is Val Caniparoli's Swipe, a highly technical piece fusing classical training with the beats of electronic and hip-hop music.
