Rock out with science and celebrate the opening of a brand-new exhibition at the Lawrence Hall of Science, Making Music: Math and Science Out Loud!

Rock out with science and celebrate the opening of a brand-new exhibition at the Lawrence Hall of Science, Making Music: Math and Science Out Loud! Making Music explores mathematical and scientific phenomena related to musical melodies, beats, harmonies, and more. Visitors of all ages and musical skill levels will nurture their inner musicians by exploring sound and experimenting with various specialty instruments and music-making tools. The celebration will take place on Saturday, 6/24/23 beginning 11:00 a.m.
Opening day activities include creating and designing LED finger lights and receiving a music-making goodie bag for children. The exhibition will feature video interviews with local Bay Area musicians, who will discuss the role of math and science in their work and what music means to them. Visitors who joined us for our President’s Day concerts featuring Alphabet Rockers will recognize Oakland’s own Tommy Soulati Shepherd from the band. Tommy will talk about his powerful songs and how he uses math and geometry to teach kids about music and how to make a beat.
The Lawrence Hall of Science is UC Berkeley’s public science center, with a mission to inspire and engage through science discovery and learning in ways that advance equity and opportunity. In addition to exhibits and programs for kids and families, The Lawrence develops curricula and learning materials for educators and researches how kids learn science.
