A Conversation with Kelly Leanos: Building Success at Deacon Construction

Q: Tell us about Deacon Construction.

A: Deacon is a prominent general contractor with offices in Seattle, Portland, Sacramento, and Pleasanton. We specialize in new construction, remodels, and tenant improvements for a variety of sectors: hospitality, retail, industrial, senior living, healthcare, and multifamily. Our project scope ranges anywhere from $10K to over $100M. Some of our notable works in the East Bay include The Waymark Apartments in Walnut Creek, San Francisco Premium Outlets in Livermore, and Sprouts Market in Oakland.

Q: What is your role there?

A: As the Business Development Manager, my role revolves around crafting strategies that support the success of Deacon and align with our organizational goals. A key part of my role is to cultivate and nurture long-standing relationships with key clients. I take immense pride in being a resource for clients right from the conceptual stages of a project, through team collaboration, to the final construction phase.

Q: How did you get your start in the construction industry?

A: It began more than 25 years ago, stemming from my work in architecture and design. My passion for creating great spaces helped advance my career. I spent 15 years at Ware Malcomb and became a Principal and Owner. My commitment to great design and building strong client relationships, led me to Deacon Construction. I'm proud to be part of a company that values treating people with respect and integrity.

Q: How has your involvement in CREW East Bay shaped your career?

A: I joined CREW East Bay over a decade ago to support and empower women in the field. Since then, I’ve served on many committees and had the honor of serving as President of CREW East Bay in 2022. Our mission is to promote the advancement of women as influential leaders in the commercial real estate industry through education, recognition, and professional relationships. We strive for true parity in opportunity, influence, power, and compensation.

Q: What is the CREW Foundation?

A: We’re dedicated to giving back to the community. Last year, we helped Girl Scout troop 40127 at Holbrook Language Academy in Concord construct a greenhouse behind their school, next to “The Secret Garden.” Thanks to our members and top sponsors, including Deacon and Metcon Construction, the girls now grow beautiful flowers and food for their community throughout the year. It's truly an amazing project.
