TORTILLERIA EL MOLINO Another neighborhood gem, El Molino gets raves for its savory carne asada and crispy carnitas on tortillas made from scratch. Bags of fresh tortillas, still warm from the pan, are ready to take home. Finish your meal with a heavenly bionico—mixed fresh fruit bathed in cream.
LA MORDIDA This tiny taqueria touts soft shell carnitas tacos made with
tender slow-cooked pork, cilantro, diced onions, and mild salsa verde. For
vegetarians, the crispy-shelled potato taco tantalizes; order it with a side of
refried beans. On Monday and Tuesday, soft tacos are $1.50. They also do huevos
and burritos at breakfast.
EL AGUILA Meats are locally sourced from purveyors like Mary’s Chicken and Homestead Farms at this Pleasant Hill spot. Plenty of veggie standouts and healthy taco twists also line the menu here. Indulgent fillings like potato or poblano are seasoned with signature spices and wrapped in fresh corn tortillas.
TACOS WALNUT CREEK Grilled, stuffed, and tortilla-wrapped tacos are a three-bite delight at this casual family-owned cantina. Tacos—chicken, beef, pork, chorizo, or veggie—start at $3. Chips and salsa complete the meal.
WALNUT CREEK YACHT CLUB Chef Kevin Weinberg and his crew created a new menu for the age of COVID-19 and lucky for us, it features his bossy fish tacos, battered or grilled, stuffed with cabbage, cumin cream sauce, and avocado salsa. Plans are in the works to convert WCYC’s parking lot into an outdoor dining space for casual summer suppers.
EL CHARRO At this popular Lafayette cantina, baskets of fresh tortilla chips come with salsa and a decadent cheese dip. Cadillac margaritas quench the thirst and tacos take on all kinds of twists: halibut battered, marinated steak, and grilled chicken topped with melted cheese and bell peppers. Takeout your tacos or eat them on the patio.
